St. Clare of Assisi

St. Clare of Assisi was born in 1193 into an Italian noble family. St. Clare left home when she was 18 inspired by the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi and became one of his first followers. In 1212 St. Clare founded the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of St. Clare, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition. The order became known for its life of abject poverty and committed life of prayer.

One day the Saracens who were in the service of Emperor Frederick II drew near Assisi and rushed upon the little convent of St Damian and had already scaled the walls of the monastery. In mortal fear the sisters had recourse to their mother, who was ill in bed. The saint, carrying the pyx containing the Most Blessed Sacrament, had herself carried to a convent window. There she pleaded fervently with the Lord of heaven and asked for protection. A mysterious voice coming from the Host said, "I shall always watch over you."  Immediately panic seized the besiegers. A ray of brilliant light which emanated from the Blessed Sacrament had dazzled them. They fell down from the walls and fled from the place. The convent was saved and the town of Assisi was spared.

St. Clare died in 1253.

Her feast day is August 11th.
